The Mississippi River is the longest navigable waterway in the U.S.. Historically, it has been divided into two sections for navigation purposes. These are called the Upper Mississippi and the Lower Mississippi. Mile 0 for the Lower river section begins at 'head of passes' about 100 miles below New Orleans, LA and ends at the mouth of the Ohio river which is approximately mile 953. The Upper river section begins at the mouth of the Ohio river and ends at Coon Rapids Dam in Minneapolis/St.Paul, Minnesota, about 866 miles distance. Adding the two sections gives a total river distance of 1819 statute miles.
